This year, our Reach Bowl-A-Thon proved its popularity in a unique way. The 27th annual event has quite a history for some, including Kristin, who has attended it for most—if not every one—of those years. Her mom, Maxine Skold, said, “Bowling has been her thing.” Since Kristin is not a late-night person, our morning bowling opportunities, including this special fundraiser, has been “a good outlet,” confirmed Maxine. It’s something that Kristin can enjoy with her roommate, and Maxine readily stated that Kristin “has thoroughly enjoyed her time participating.”
Others agree. One enthusiastic competitor shared that a Bowl-A-Thon highlight for him is “going up against my dad.” Another commented on the great decorations, how well organized the event is, and that their young child was having a blast.
Associated Bank Volunteers
However, one aspect really stood out this year: volunteers. Some of the dozens of volunteers who gave their time at the event included three special groups. Employees of Associated Bank have a strong history with this event, and this year was no exception. Donning their bright green shirts, they showed up with smiles on their faces, ready to lend a hand again.
University of Minnesota Students
Two other groups came out to represent universities. Students from the University of Minnesota discovered this opportunity through the Volunteer Match website as a way to fulfill a project for their Sports in a Diverse Society course. These 12 Golden Gophers were scurrying around all morning, bringing enthusiasm and energy as they went.
Michigan State University Alums
Not to be outdone, a group of 18 people representing the Michigan State University Alumni Association came to join the action too. The day of the event, April 13, happened to be an annual day of service for the university, when all MSU alums give their time to worthwhile causes everywhere around the globe. After serving at our event in the morning, they had an afternoon gig lined up as well. One alum, Brittanie, helped organize their participation after hearing about it from another alum who helped at our event a few years ago. Brittanie said, “It was such positive experience for them that we wanted to do this again.” She said that the group was excited not only to be able to volunteer, but to have the chance to do so in a way that involved interacting directly with the people impacted by their support.
Reach was humbled by everyone who took part in this year’s Bowl-A-Thon…whether as a volunteer, participant, donor, sponsor, or family cheerleader. We could even say that you all really bowled us over with your support!
